Embellish a nightdress or bedroom curtains with beautiful shadow embroidery and pretty lily of the valley motifs. White stitching on white chiffon or voile gives a delicate appearance but you could also use brilliant coloured threads for a more vibrant effect. Design by Fay Maxwell.
Shadow work is a very beautiful and underrated technique. It uses luxurious and delicate fabrics, light to sew on and a pleasure to feel. When worked with brilliant coloured threads on fine lawns, the effect is vibrant and exciting, but I prefer self-coloured threads on fine silk for a chic and expensive-looking finish. The lily of the valley design, here white on white, gives a dainty and pretty appearance without being too difficult to sew. Have fun and good luck!
