    Transfer embroidery patterns

Learn how to transfer patterns on to light or dark fabric

The technique and tool you will use depends on whether you're embroidering on light or dark coloured fabric. For dark fabric, you'll need white dressmaker's carbon paper and a pencil. For lighter fabric, you can use a washable or fading fabric pen.

    For light fabrics

Trace your picture directly on to your fabric using a washable or fading fabric pen. Once you’ve finished stitching, spray with water to remove your guidelines or allow them to fade (depending on which type of pen you have used).

    For dark fabrics

Place a piece of white dressmaker’s carbon paper facedown on your fabric. Place your pattern on top and trace using a pencil. Remove the carbon paper to reveal your design.
