How to do detached buttonhole

Work the first row as ordinary buttonhole stitches. Subsequent rows are all worked on the surface except for the edges. Bring the needle up at 1, then through the stitch above, with the thread kept under the needle, to form a small loop. Finish off by pushing the needle back into the fabric.
