This monochrome, slouchy Fair Isle sweate is one that teenaged girls are sure to love. Thanks to the chunky yarn chosen by designer Amanda Jones (Lang Yarns Piora), this jumper knitting pattern knits up quickly enough that there’s still time to knit it and get plenty of wear out of it. “I loved this yarn as my knitting grew so fast. This was a very quick knit!” Amanda says. For once, fashion is not proving fickle, either: a lot of the knitwear trends from this winter look set to return next winter, so even the most fashion-forward teen will be getting it out to wear again later this year.
Big knits can be heavy knits, but Piora is 87% alpaca. As alpaca is a hollow fibre, it weighs far less than most other fibres, making the jumper pleasing to wear and enabling it to hold its shape. The other component in Piora is wool, which brings warmth and durability. While the yarn is chunky and the colourwork simple, this isn’t the best project to start with if you’ve never done a Fair Isle pattern before. “The needles needed to knit it are quite large and this makes carrying two threads at the same time a little awkward,” says Amanda. Take a little time over the making up, matching patterns up and so on, and you’ll soon have a jumper that you’ll love, and one that will definitely appeal to any trendy young things you knit for!
