Estonian mittens are knitted from the cuff to the tip, with the thumb being added later. No gusset is knitted for the thumb, allowing it to lie nice and flat. The Dutch Knitters - aka Carla Meijsen and Hilly van der Sluis - have spent time in Estonia studying its knitting traditions, and have adapted them to create their own mitten designs. “Look at the white, and you’ll see hearts. Look at the blue and you’ll see them fly... in the colours of the Estonian flag,” say Carla and Hilly.

This design comes from Warm Hands by Carla Meijsen and Hilly van der Sluis. The pattern is featured in issue 50 of The Knitter - the price we've listed is for buying the digital issue on Apple Newsstand.
