Caroline Pearce has created a light, soft jumper for children that takes its design cues from classic gansey patterns. The yoke is decorated with tiny twisted cables on garter stitch panels, separated by stocking stitch panels with stylised duck motifs. Garter stitch stripes appear at the bottom of the yoke, and add textural interest to the sleeves. Caroline recommends a stretchy cast-on for the project, such as the traditional Channel Island method. “The Channel Island cast-on is a strong and elastic cast-on often used for guernsey and gansey sweaters,” says Caroline. “It has an attractive picot edge, too. To find out more, hop over to You Tube where Gansey expert Beth Brown-Reinsel has an explaining video explaining the technique. The sweater uses a bamboo-nylon yarn from Twilleys called Gorgeous 4ply, which is a great choice for children’s garments. It’s silky-soft and machine washable on a cool setting. Caroline has chosen a light brown colour but the yarn is also available in muted green, pink and blue.
