Once you’ve worn a pair of handknitted socks, you’ll never want to go back to the shop-bought sort. They’re so much more comfortable to wear, and more attractive to look at too. To make this pair of socks you knit a simple lace band, then pick up stitches along one edge and work a conventional sock, knitting in the round. “Don’t worry if you can’t tell the difference between the right and wrong sides of the lace pattern – it is on a garter stitch background so the difference is very subtle. Just decide which is the wrong side and weave your ends in on this side. Alternatively, use some scrap yarn to mark the wrong side while you are knitting,” says designer Jen Arnall-Culliford.
