You will need to take your time and pay attention to the charts. Your shawl won’t look like the one in the picture while you’re knitting it. Blocking is essential to bring out the pattern, turning crinkled knitting into a work of art. “I recommend using a big towel or picnic rug (tartan picnic rugs with waterproof backing are popular) to keep the blocking area from getting wet. Special blocking mats can be bought online. Lots of people use the rubber kids’ jigsaw playmats,” says Anniken.
