The style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh was the inspiration behind this pattern from Judy Furlong. The plain white scarf and shape of the long gloves lend themselves well to being embellished with the stylised 'Glasgow Rose' and long parallel lines, typical of this great architect, designer and watercolourist. Judy explains, “I decided upon the use of gunmetal rather than black beads as a tribute to Rennie Mackintosh's work in silver-coloured metals.” The actual knitting should not cause difficulties, though extra-short doublepointed needles are particularly useful for knitting the fingers of gloves. Otherwise, it is interesting to note that the hem of the gloves is made using a temporary cast on and then picking up the stitches. Beading can be quite slow work and the beads must be moved along the yarn carefully so that neither yarn nor beads become damaged. Judy recommends, “If you prefer, beads could be sewn on later.” Judy has used a superwash 4ply by Rennie Handknits, but other 4ply yarns would work well, such as Rowan Pure Wool 4ply or Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper yarn.
