How to stitch French knots
As seen in Cross Stitcher
French knots are unbelievably easy when you know how... speaking as one who formerly was afraid of them, I can promise you that once you have a couple of practise runs, and read our tutorial below, you'll soon be hooked on adding them to all your stitching projects!
Step 1 Using a sharp embroidery needle, which will help to pierce the fabric, bring your needle up at your starting point, and wrap your thread once around the needle. If it's a larger French knot you're after, simply add another strand of cotton. |
Step 2The next step is to hold your thread firmly and to take your needle down, halfway through the fabric, carefully separating the aida as you go. This will help to secure the knot and will also prevent it from escaping through the same hole! |
Step 3Slide the twisted thread down the needle, so that it rests on the fabric's surface, and gently feed the needle through the fabric completely. Keep your twisted thread as taut as possible to prevent it from becoming tangled and out of control! |
Step 4Gently pull the thread through to tighten the knot, so that it sits neatly on the surface, the knot should look nicely rounded as shown. If you tighten the knot too firmly it will disappear, so have a practice on spare fabric until you feel more confident. |
