How to secure buttons
As seen in Cross Stitcher
Adding buttons to your finished cross stitch is a fun way to add texture and a 3D feel.
As buttons add a bit of weight to the front of your work, it's important to secure them firmly at the back of your work to keep them in place! Find out how it's done with our easy step-by-step tutorial below....
 Step 1
Fold a single thread length in two to create a loop at one end. Thread your needle with the two cut ends before bringing your needle up to the fabric's surface, keeping the loop on the reverse. Make your first half cross stitch and pass your needle through the loop to secure. Attach the button on to your thread on the front of your work and pull the needle back through to the back. |
 Step 2
Once you've finished attaching each button, carefully weave your thread through the back of a few of your existing stitches. If you don't have enough stitches, you can weave your needle through the fabric itself instead, being sure to stay behind the button. |
 Step 3
For extra security, it's wise to pass your needle through your final stitch to create a loop and then catch this loop with your needle. This will create a tiny knot that will hold your embellishment firmly in place. This is particularly useful for items such as cushions that see regular use. |
