    Easy guide to backstitch

    As seen in Cross Stitcher

The key to neat, even backstitch is to work it once the rest of the design is complete. Using a sharp embroidery needle really helps too. Get started with our step-by-step guide below, then try our five top tips to help you sharpen up your backstitch skills!

    Step 1

Using a sharp embroidery needle, start your thread off by weaving it through the reverse of your stitching, before bringing your needle up at your starting point.

    Step 2

Work your backstitch over a single aida block, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally depending on the direction of the stitch shown on the chart.

    Step 3

Bring your needle up an aida block away from this stitch, and take your needle down through the fabric so that it lies next to your previous stitch, and so on.
