The weather may be changing to the cooler, wetter times of autumn, but when there's stitching to be done and warm thoughts to be had, every day can be full of pleasure. Sue Cook was inspired by Stevenson's verse, “I wanted to capture the spirit of the poem and the pleasure of being cosy indoors with favourite books. In fact the two children are based on a studio portrait of my mother and her little brother taken in the mid-'30s. I thought the style of clothes they were wearing would be perfect to give the right nostalgic look. There is a huge amount of stitching in this piece but I know this is the sort of thing that a reader of Cross Stitch Collection will be happy to take on as a challenge. I was also aware that as a project for winter it represents the sort of thing that you can get stuck into on dark evenings and work at steadily until spring! I think you could also work just the roundel with the two children at the top, or the verse and picture book at the bottom, if the whole project was too daunting.”
