Traditional crochet motifs become a modern scarf when worked in beautiful hand-dyed yarns

This beautiful scarf, 'Nerissa', makes great use of hand-dyed sock yarns. While hand-dyed yarns are never going to fall into the category of budget yarns, you can get an awful lot of knitting or crochet out of a skein of sock yarn, making it more economical than you might think. 'Nerissa' is a simple design, based on a single motif, and the use of different shades of a limited palette keeps it looking fresh and stylish. Of course, you could crochet it in another colour, but for the best effect stick to just a few shades. The scarf in the pictures is 2 blocks long and two blocks wide, and measures 66 x 6 inches. “You can make it longer or shorter by increasing or decreasing the number of blocks,” advises designer Amanda Perkins.
