Read on for our step-by-step guide to making your own piggy piñata!
Step 1Blow up a balloon, then cut four semi-circles of card to measure 20cm in diameter. Tape them so that they form cone shapes. Tape the plastic container on to the balloon to form the nose, and add the card cones to form legs. Cover the balloon with Vaseline. |
Step 2Mix equal quantities of PVA glue and water to make a paste. Cut or tear a newspaper into strips and dip these into the mixture. Layer them on to the balloon so that each strip overlaps slightly. Keep layering the strips until the pig is completely covered with three layers. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours. |
Step 3Cut two triangles out of cardboard and stick these to the top of the pig’s head. Create a flap on the underside of the pig by cutting three sides of an 8x8cm square with a craft knife. Make a small hole in the flap, thread a 1m length of ribbon through and tie in a secure knot. |
Step 4Check that the ribbon will open the flap when pulled. Fill with sweets and close the flap. |
Step 5Tape and tie two 2m lengths of ribbon around the pig's middle so it can be hung up. |
Step 6Select a variety of colours of crêpe paper and cut them into strips to measure the length of the pig. Cut a fringe along one edge of each strip as shown. |
Step 7Glue the crêpe paper strips on to the balloon, so that they cover the newspaper layer. Work upwards so they overlap and form stripes of colour around the pig. Cut some smaller strips to go around the ears and along the top of the pig, to measure approximately 2cm wide each. Make sure that the ribbon doesn’t get stuck down as you go. Make the tail by covering a 20cm length of craft wire with pink crêpe paper. Twist the tail around a pencil and secure in place with glue. Finally stick the eyes on to the pig. |
Step 8Use a skewer to make 10 holes in the flap beneath the pig and thread 100cm lengths of ribbon through them. Don’t knot the ends. This way, when pulled, they won’t actually open the flap, but come away in the hands of the person pulling. Congratulations! You’re ready to play. |
Step 9How to play the pinata game:
Hang your pig so that its ribbons dangle down. A tree is ideal for this, or you could use a hook or door frame. Take turns to pull a ribbon – only one will open the piñata! To add to the fun, tie a blindfold around the eyes of the person pulling the ribbon. When the sweets fall out, share them with everyone! To re-use, refill with sweets, patch up the torn paper and replace the ribbons. |
